Hey Folks. It’s Sara.
We are all human and being human is hard.
As your fellow human, just doing my best to live life here on Earth, I am also a business owner committed to the value that we are all equal but different. Creating a business that is sustainable for me personally means that I have to ensure the business is personally sustainable with everyone it connects with –whether that be a supplier or an employee. Each of us has unique needs, challenges, and desires. Those special characteristics should be acknowledged and supported. It’s time we make room for the differences. I don't want to encourage cookie-cutter humans. As a matter of fact, I would dare to say that nurturing creative space for each individualized personality to bloom is crucial to our success. Just as no single rose is identical to another, diversity adds to the beauty of being human.
Whenever possible we stock our flowers from local growers. When I do have to import flowers – which I don't like but it has to happen – I work with specific farms and growers who meet quality ethical standards. These businesses pay their employees living wages, give paid time off and sick leave, offer educational advances, and support employees with child care (some having centers on site).
People are human, whether employees or not. A person does not lose their identity when they clock in at work. Every person that I work with is an individual. They are beautiful beings with so much in common and many differences. Nurturing a safe atmosphere for growth (literally and metaphorically) and holding myself accountable for that positive environment is something I have tried my best to implement here at Sweet Alice.
Coming up on the blog, we've got some fresh and exciting content to bring you. We will continue sharing more of our sustainability information and resources for fellow florists and customers alike. Plus we have something new in the works! Over the past couple of months, we have been interviewing local, women-led small businesses that have been creating ripples of positive change through their incredible work. Hearing their stories has been an awe-inspiring experience, and we are thrilled to share them with you.
We are all human. No one is perfect. Be willing to hold yourself accountable when you make a mistake. Be kind always.
Much Love, Sara
