If you look closely at many of our arrangements, you’ll notice that they’re hand tied. Using aluminum wire or binding wire, we like to finish each arrangement with a hand tie. And there’s a reason for it.
My mom’s birthday is April 5th. Knowing this, I called a friend and my mentor in North Dakota to ensure she received something fantastic for her birthday (turns out I wasn’t the only one). She was thrilled with what James delivered, but when I spoke to her a week later, she mentioned some flowers were starting to die, and she was simply pulling them out. She said she added water every day, and she loved them (my mom adores flowers) but she didn’t have the skill or knowledge to pull them, trim them, and put them back in an artistically pleasing way.
Now, I know James, and I know his flowers, and I absolutely know that if they were well cared for they’d last weeks. But most arrangements are too complicated to take care of for the average Joe or Jill; they use floral foam, or the stems weave with other stems in the vase to create what the designer has envisioned. Hence my love of the hand tied arrangement.
Look, I’ll be honest, I don’t always pull my flowers at home, wash the vase every other day, trim the ends, and refill with fresh floral food. It’s a pain in the butt to deconstruct and reconstruct an uncontrolled arrangement, even for me. But if a vase has a hand tied in it, I find it much easier to handle the upkeep. I simply pull the arrangement whole, wash the vase, refill with floral food, and trim the ends of the entire arrangement with gardening shears. When I replace the arrangement, the stems are a bit shorter, but it looks exactly like it did when I took it out. And my flowers last up to 4 weeks (seriously, there’s a four week old hydrangea/asltroemeria/dusty miller hand tied in my house right now. The alstro is finally starting to give up the ghost.)
I don't always hand tie, but if you ask, we'll always do it for you. We want to make it easy to keep your flowers happy and healthy, and your life blooming beautiful.
